Whether it is what is happening with the details of Lindsay Lohan’s life, or the allegations concerning Herman Cain, the fact is, we have all made bad choices we wish we could take back, but today is a new day…and its time to make better choices.

“When it snows, you have two choices: shovel or make snow angels” ~ Anonymous

It’s choices that determine how much money you make, your career, whether you realize your dreams, who you date, how much weight you lose or gain, and so forth. Unfortunately, no matter what our education, society doesn’t always do a great job teaching us how to make good choices. We rarely learn a decision-making process we can implement repeatedly, no matter the topic. Here’s five things to consider before you go forward on any project or decision:

1. Get my mind in a good place.

2. Get my spirit in a good place.

3. Have I checked my plans with smart people?

4. Do my plans coincide with God’s plans for my life?

5. How will this choice make me feel in the future?

This is what God says,
the God who builds a road right through the ocean,
who carves a path through pounding waves,
The God who summons horses and chariots and armies—
they lie down and then can’t get up;
they’re snuffed out like so many candles:
“Forget about what’s happened;
don’t keep going over old history.
Be alert, be present. I’m about to do something brand-new.
It’s bursting out! Don’t you see it?
There it is! I’m making a road through the desert,
rivers in the badlands.
Wild animals will say ‘Thank you!’
—the coyotes and the buzzards—
Because I provided water in the desert,
rivers through the sun-baked earth,
Drinking water for the people I chose,
the people I made especially for myself,
a people custom-made to praise me.”

Isaiah 43:16-21 (MSG)

Sometimes in life you find yourself at a place where no rational plan of action will seem to help. What do you do? Whether you are still without employment, divorced, broke, sick or simply having a really, really bad month…learning to live beyond your circumstances will change your outlook on community, life and God. I like to refer to this as the Miracle Mentality.

What is a miracle? A miracle is a supernatural intervention from God into the natural affairs of mankind. It is something that is uncommon, not the norm, a wonder, a marvel, or something astonishing. We have heard of miracles in the past…we may have even experienced one in our own life, however sometimes we lose light of God’s immeasurable power and abilities.

“God can do anything, you know—far more than you could ever imagine or guess or request in your wildest dreams! He does it not by pushing us around but by working within us, his Spirit deeply and gently within us.” Ephesians 3:20 MSG

How can you have a Miracle Mentality? Mentality is defined as a capacity, point of view, mindset, outlook, attitude, disposition and a reasoning. Changing your understanding of the size and scope of God’s power, skills and qualifications is key. The more you choose to accept this, the more your outlook will reflect, through trust, His immeasurable ability to make do the impossible in your life.

Let’s look as Moses for example. He made a decision one day that could have stopped him from being who he was created to be and stopped him from eventually leading God’s children out of Egypt and into their promise.

“Time passed. Moses grew up. One day he went and saw his brothers, saw all that hard labor. Then he saw an Egyptian hit a Hebrew—one of his relatives! He looked this way and then that; when he realized there was no one in sight, he killed the Egyptian and buried him in the sand.” Exodus 2:11 MSG

After wandering in the desert for some time, he had decidedly lost hope and began to live his life according to his failures. Shortly after, God confronted him and revealed the task that would make him famous (Exodus 3). He had three choices. He could sit. He could settle. Or, he could cooperate. Moses chose to cooperate with God by bringing his limitations, his frustrations and his intimidation. God brought three things as well…understanding, compassion and power.

Moses had to first believe in God’s power and ability to do miracles. Secondly, he had to expect God to do the impossible. Third, he had to receive God’s miraculous power in his own life. Fourth, he chose to become a miracle to others by living a life that surpassed his circumstances. Fifth, he had to choose to release that same power that had encompassed his life into the lives of those around him.

Throughout history, God has called shaky people to do sturdy projects. Moses, a shaky person, was about to become sturdy and lead captive people into a promised land.

I’m in San Diego today speaking at five consecutive meetings. Between services, I taped this candid conversation on video of how your life can be changed by facing your giants in 2011.

The transcript is provided below. Be encouraged and take a step today toward a new and better life.

Two services down, three to go. Still have my energy… Still have my energy (laugh)!
I’m speaking on getting out of debt, and my friend Bob Rickey helped me to put this message together.
See, God wants us to get out of debt, people! Debt is not good.
Debt means…listen to this… something that is owed, such as money, goods or services.
It means you’re bound to pay something.
If you’re in debt today, God’s big enough to getcha out.
I really believe that in 2011… a lot of you are gonna see yourself out of debt.
But you gotta work your land. You’re not just gonna wish it away, hope it away,
In my notes, I talk about facing your giants.
You gotta face your giants.
You gotta just say, ‘Hey, God is bigger than what I am dealing with in front of me.’
You gotta know that God is on your side. You know that when Moses was down, it didn’t look like he was gonna make it.
But God said, “I will hook you up.”
So remember that today.
God’s gonna hook you up.
Face your giants.
Get out of debt.
Go change people’s lives.
Keep on dreamin’, you bunch of dreamers.
And join the DreamMakers Club too.

Bernie Brillstein was a famous film and TV producer in the entertainment industry. He helped with the success of many hit shows like The Muppet Show and Saturday Night Live. He managed careers like John Belushi and Brad Pitt. As a result of his success he even received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in April 2001. Several years ago I was invited by the late Bernie Brillstein to go sailing with him throughout Europe on his luxurious yacht. It was a privilege to be asked to go sailing with Bernie and some of his very well-known friends. The only challenge with this invitation was there were a set of rules, and one of them included: you can’t bring your cell phone, or use the fax machine that was on board. On this excursion was a well-known singer and even a man who owned a network that I’m sure you’ve heard of. None of the others seemed phased by this.

As we talked about the journey, all of them were excited about being “free” from incoming calls. For a guy who’s a supposed to be a life coach… I actually felt panicked. You see, sometimes I get ninety calls a day and every time I feel that buzz – it means somebody’s looking for me. What was I going to do without that “feeling”? I shared my thoughts with some of the others who were all in their 60’s and 70’s and they had a good laugh. Bernie told me that he runs a successful company and he doesn’t even carry a cell phone. It’s because he likes to stay in the moment. I found this extreme but I was always willing to listen and learn.

If we all want to be honest, we’re just far too busy. From our jobs to our relationships to trying to meet other people’s needs. If we’re not careful we’ll become “human-doings”… rather than human-beings. To “do” means: to perform, to execute, to accomplish. To “be” means: to exist, to live, to happen. I think one of the problems with the younger generation is that we always think we have to accomplish but sometimes we just need to happen. In other words, we just need to be there. It’s a funny thing when somebody says, “What’s happening?” or “How have you been doing?” We usually don’t talk about our feelings, or our “quiet moments”… we talk about our accomplishments and our performances.

It’s an amazing thing that we have less than half a year of 2011. Soon, you’ll be venturing into 2012. Whoever thought this would have happened when you were a kid?

You can choose to run through December and see how fast you can get there or you can choose to get in the moment, be fully present, fully feeling, fully alive, and simply enjoy every minute that this year still has to offer.

I’d be the first to admit that life is a balancing act. I believe in working hard… and I mean very hard! But I also believe in taking naps… taking walks… spending time with great people.

When you slow down to the speed of life, it will be amazing how good it feels because this world truly has rhythm. So find its tempo and go with the flow, set sail and live your finest life.

“That’s one of my big rules: when you have a great story, you tell it – no matter what.” - Brillstein

Luke 12:22: Steep Yourself in God-Reality
22-24 He continued this subject with his disciples. “Don’t fuss about what’s on the table at mealtimes or if the clothes in your closet are in fashion. There is far more to your inner life than the food you put in your stomach, more to your outer appearance than the clothes you hang on your body. Look at the ravens, free and unfettered, not tied down to a job description, carefree in the care of God. And you count far more.”
