How important is imagination? You’ll be amazed at what it can do. The way we think determines how we act. It says in the Bible, “For as a man thinks within himself, so is he.” Shakespeare wrote, ” Nothing is but thinking makes it so.” It’s not just an opinion, it’s a fact. When you center your thinking of an idea to the exclusion of everything else, that idea becomes a reality.

It’s a power that works both ways. If you thoughts are filled with fear and worry, your life will be unstable, anxious, and insecure. If you think only of the bad things that can happen, the good things will pass you by. If you think you don’t deserve to win, you’ll never come in better than second. And you won’t enjoy that.

It’s been said many times by many people, which only means that it’s probably true:

Watch your thoughts, they become words.

Watch your words, they become actions.

Watch your actions, they become habits.

Watch your habits, they become character.

Watch your character, it becomes your destiny.

We make our own reality. We make it every day in every way, sometimes when we don’t even realize that’s what we’re doing. The reason I’ve been so insistent that you should imagine your ideal future, envision it in the smallest detail you can think of, is because the more vividly you can see it and the attractive it is to you, the stronger its motivational power will be. You might call it willpower, and that’s OK, but it’s not a force that pushing you; it’s a power that you can control, and if you do, it will lead you in the direction you are aiming. You are in charge.

I’ve learned how effective imagination can be. I use it all the time now, even for things that seem wildly impossible, like finding a home for all the people on the streets in America, or solving the problem of street gangs in the inner city. Sometimes it’s refered to as “Design Thinking“, thinking outside the box. I know that I may not accomplish every single thing I imagine, but listen to this…I find that I come up with some ideas that help significantly. A lot of the work we do with StoreyDreams Foundation and other non-profit organizations came through this kind of dynamic thinking. When we started, we didn’t have any idea that major corporations, star athletes, and celebrities would all come together to help fight drugs, gangs, and other inner-city issues. But they did. So I say, go for it. Go for the gold, and don’t be surprised when you get it.

You may have attempted these exercises and decided that the whole project is hopeless. There are so many things to change and there’s so much work to do that you don’t have a prayer of reversing your behavior. I felt that way too for a while, but as my son learned in the first grade, the way to eat a hippopotamus is one bit at a time. Don’t think you’re going to change everything overnight. One bit at a time.

I’ve talked about the basics that go into creating an utmost life: purpose, passions, and priorities…the 3 P’s, which define your goals and how you want to get to them. I’ve also talked about the attitudes that will keep you on the path…imagination, focus, and courage. Now it’s time to take the first steps toward transforming your life…if you haven’t already done so. If I told you how to bake an apple pie, even if I gave you all the ingredients, you wouldn’t have much success unless I also gave you the tools…rolling pin, pie pan, pie weights, and an oven.

The first step in finding your God idea is to start looking for it. Even if you began this journey wanting to change your life, sincerely searching for the wonder that’s in you, you may have been just browsing a blog so far, flipping through a menu, waiting for someone or something to make a choice for you. It’s like when ou go out for dinner and everybody always asks everybody else what they’re having before they decide. You might be thinking, Maybe Tim will suggest what I should do next, so that I don’t have to do all that writing and thinking and stuff. You may not even be aware that you’re doing that. But, unless you’ve started to feel that urgency, that sense that there’s a new life waiting for you around the corner, then that’s what going on. When you do feel that urgency, it’s so exciting and energizing that I couldn’t stop you even if I wanted to.

Of course there’s no way I can tell you what you should be doing and you probably know that. They have to be your answers, your purpose, your passions. No one else can serve them up for you. So want are you waiting for…dig deep and go for it.

“Listen to the MUSTN’Ts, child, listen to the DON’Ts, listen to the SHOULDN’Ts, the IMPOSSIBLEs, the WON’Ts, listen to the NEVER HAVEs, then listen close to me–Anything can happen, child, ANYTHING can be.”

- Shel Silverstein

Never Stop Dreaming

Father’s Day can be laced with mixed emotions for many people. Some of us have good fathers, while other fathers struggled in guiding and guarding our lives. Some of us lost our dads and some of us are not sure if Dad will be with us next year. Some of us are dads ourselves, or grandfathers. I lost my dad when I was ten years old, but he left me with many rich memories.

Jesus taught us a lot about his Father while he was on the earth. In Matthew 7:11, Jesus says that if we humans know how to give good gifts to our children, God is that much more willing to give good things to his children if we just ask him. Now that my dad is not with me on the earth, I have become pretty good at going to God, my heavenly Father, for what I need, and guess what – I’m rarely disappointed! The more I ask, it seems the more He is willing to give. In fact, what He gives me seems only to be limited by my imagination.

So this Father’s Day, whether you are a father, a daughter, a son, a grandfather or an orphan… take the ceiling off of what you want from your Heavenly Father. Start thinking bigger. And never stop dreaming.
