The Bible references a man by the name of Jabez, whose name literally meant “born in pain”. He was born into and through pain. He was “destined” to live a life a pain.

A name meant a lot in those days. They weren’t given lightly. They were given to tell a story or proclaim a future. They were so important that there are numerous accounts of individuals whose names were changed, symbolically changing their destiny. Jacob became Israel, Saul became Paul, Abram to Abraham, Simon to Peter, Sarai to Sarah, Joseph to Barnabus, Benoni to Benjamin. Names were significant.

Jabez would have known that his name held a lot of weight in the direction for his life. The expectations for his life were set low. People’s expectations for us are not usually very high either.

When we were younger and we left the house to go out for the night, we were usually told, “be safe…don’t get into trouble”. We rarely hear, “Have the best night ever” or “Let me know how many people you inspire tonight”. People around us are usually satisfied with us making it through…getting by and being safe. They live in the Land of Okay and expect us to live there as well, quietly and without too much fuss.

With the New Year upon us, we must remember, there’s no magic in a new year. We must create something. We must actively pursue greatness. The question is, once we’ve realized our pain, our mediocre life in the Land of Okay, we must ask, “NOW WHAT?”

Jabez asks God to place His hand upon him. He understood God’s willingness to GUIDE, GUARD and GOVERN. He understood that merely wanting a better life was not enough. He wanted support. He wanted support from the God he had heard about. The God that blessed Abraham and the God that delivered Moses and the people of Israel. He wanted help from that same God.  He asked God to enlarge his influence, his resources, the expectations on his life…and it says, God did.

Our expectations for our own life need a paradigm shift. When we understand that we are not in this alone, we carry a certain weight on us in life. When I walk into a big meeting with executives and producers, I don’t walk in as the little brown kid who got stared at by every light-skinned person in my neighborhood growing up. I walk in knowing something. I walk in knowing that I have access to a God who changed my destiny, who changed the expectation for my life.

Hosea wrote that people are destroyed due to lack of knowledge. We must seek EDUCATION, INFORMATION and INSIGHT. But, it’s not enough to just know something, you must do something about it. You must actively pursue greatness. We must get our hustle on. And when we fail…get up and keep moving forward. The strength is not being perfect, the strength is in failing forward. When life hits you, getting back up is where you learn greatness. David said, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil. He knew he wasn’t alone. David failed, but got back up and continued in his greatness.

Whether you’ve been in prison, divorced, had tremendous loss, made poor choices, or have simply been named “pain”, it’s up to you to do something about it. But you don’t have to do it alone. The same God that delivered Daniel from the lion’s den and raised Lazarus from the dead is there to guide you, guard you, and govern you to greatness.

When we realize our greatness and move forward in it, we will not only have a full life, but now we have become a hope for those around us in the Land of Okay. Our greatness is not just for us to selfishly enjoy. Our greatness is to give life to those around us. To live in such a way that provokes others to greatness.

Though we live in the Land of Okay, we are not required to live by its mediocre ways. We don’t have to be merely okay, we don’t have to live an almost life. We can live an utmost life. We can be more than okay. We can live a life of greatness.

This year, I challenge you to change your expectation. Change your outlook and get up and actively pursue greatness!

Sometimes in life you find yourself at a place where no rational plan of action will seem to help. What do you do? Whether you are still without employment, divorced, broke, sick or simply having a really, really bad month…learning to live beyond your circumstances will change your outlook on community, life and God. I like to refer to this as the Miracle Mentality.

What is a miracle? A miracle is a supernatural intervention from God into the natural affairs of mankind. It is something that is uncommon, not the norm, a wonder, a marvel, or something astonishing. We have heard of miracles in the past…we may have even experienced one in our own life, however sometimes we lose light of God’s immeasurable power and abilities.

“God can do anything, you know—far more than you could ever imagine or guess or request in your wildest dreams! He does it not by pushing us around but by working within us, his Spirit deeply and gently within us.” Ephesians 3:20 MSG

How can you have a Miracle Mentality? Mentality is defined as a capacity, point of view, mindset, outlook, attitude, disposition and a reasoning. Changing your understanding of the size and scope of God’s power, skills and qualifications is key. The more you choose to accept this, the more your outlook will reflect, through trust, His immeasurable ability to make do the impossible in your life.

Let’s look as Moses for example. He made a decision one day that could have stopped him from being who he was created to be and stopped him from eventually leading God’s children out of Egypt and into their promise.

“Time passed. Moses grew up. One day he went and saw his brothers, saw all that hard labor. Then he saw an Egyptian hit a Hebrew—one of his relatives! He looked this way and then that; when he realized there was no one in sight, he killed the Egyptian and buried him in the sand.” Exodus 2:11 MSG

After wandering in the desert for some time, he had decidedly lost hope and began to live his life according to his failures. Shortly after, God confronted him and revealed the task that would make him famous (Exodus 3). He had three choices. He could sit. He could settle. Or, he could cooperate. Moses chose to cooperate with God by bringing his limitations, his frustrations and his intimidation. God brought three things as well…understanding, compassion and power.

Moses had to first believe in God’s power and ability to do miracles. Secondly, he had to expect God to do the impossible. Third, he had to receive God’s miraculous power in his own life. Fourth, he chose to become a miracle to others by living a life that surpassed his circumstances. Fifth, he had to choose to release that same power that had encompassed his life into the lives of those around him.

Throughout history, God has called shaky people to do sturdy projects. Moses, a shaky person, was about to become sturdy and lead captive people into a promised land.

Sandra Bullock turned from the girl next door to a serious Oscar winner in 2010, but when her world was shook with the discovery of her husband Jesse James having an affair, Bullock came out on top with grace. She completed the adoption of her son and continues on with inner strength during a difficult time.

That in and of itself is inspiring, however the fact that she showed up in person at the Razzie Awards later that year to accept her Worst Actress Golden Raspberry trophy for her role in “All About Steve.” left me in amazement. She arrived pulling a cart full of DVDs for the Razzie Foundation members, and said: “I will show up next year if you promise to watch the movie, and really consider whether it was really and truly the worst performance.” She pledged to return her trophy if that was the case.

The implication of that move was inspiring, because everyone has moments in their careers where they put out terrific work, and others where they produce not-so-terrific work. Typically the not-so-terrific stuff happens early on and is buried in your archives by the time the person steps up to the microphone, dignified and serious, to accept their Oscar, Emmy, Pulitzer, Nobel, what have you.

“I’ve made mistakes, and I know why I made them, but I made that choice. Nobody’s ever made a choice for me.” – Sandra Bullock

That Sandra Bullock embraced all of her work and had such a sense of humor about it is truly classy. Mistakes, failures and flops – in work, in parenting, in life — are part of the journey. She reminded everyone not to get sidelined by a Razzie, because an Oscar-winning performance may lie ahead – and whatever happens, keep it light, keep taking risks, and keep having fun. (And always remember to thank your mom in your acceptance speech.)

Learning from mistakes requires three things:

1. Take risks…allow yourself the opportunity to grow and be challenged.

2. Be bold enough to admit to your mistakes.

3. Be courageous in making forward changes in your life.

The Scriptures state that a righteous man falls seven times, yet gets back up. Stories of Moses, David and even Paul remind us that our mistakes don’t have to dictate our legacy. Embrace your mistakes, learn from them, but don’t remain in them.

I’m in San Diego today speaking at five consecutive meetings. Between services, I taped this candid conversation on video of how your life can be changed by facing your giants in 2011.

The transcript is provided below. Be encouraged and take a step today toward a new and better life.

Two services down, three to go. Still have my energy… Still have my energy (laugh)!
I’m speaking on getting out of debt, and my friend Bob Rickey helped me to put this message together.
See, God wants us to get out of debt, people! Debt is not good.
Debt means…listen to this… something that is owed, such as money, goods or services.
It means you’re bound to pay something.
If you’re in debt today, God’s big enough to getcha out.
I really believe that in 2011… a lot of you are gonna see yourself out of debt.
But you gotta work your land. You’re not just gonna wish it away, hope it away,
In my notes, I talk about facing your giants.
You gotta face your giants.
You gotta just say, ‘Hey, God is bigger than what I am dealing with in front of me.’
You gotta know that God is on your side. You know that when Moses was down, it didn’t look like he was gonna make it.
But God said, “I will hook you up.”
So remember that today.
God’s gonna hook you up.
Face your giants.
Get out of debt.
Go change people’s lives.
