There are many, many reasons why we feel we can’t do something. We know two that come from inside: fear of changing who we are and fear of failure. What’s one of the big ones? Come on, you know this. Money. Right now you’re probably thinking you can’t afford to do the thing that will make you truly deeply satisfied. Not only that, you can’t afford to be able to afford it. You can’t take time away from this, you can’t save on that. Think about what you’re saying, you can’t afford to be able to afford the thing you most crave and need?
I don’t believe it. I think you can’t afford not to. You can’t afford to spend your life going from sleep to work to home to sleep to work to home over and over again. Isn’t there something in your life that you don’t need to afford? Seriously, did you have to afford that new suit you saw last week? Did you have to afford that new cell phone that everybody thinks is so cool? Your balance sheet needs to take into account a longer term than just the end of the month. If you want to live an utmost life, you can’t afford not to learn new things. You can’t afford not to do new things, to be new things. You’ll never make a better investment.
My first experience at finding money to satisfy a hunger came after chasing an ice cream vendor on a hot summer day. As soon as my friends heard the music of the truck, they shouted, “Ice cream, let’s go!” I pedaled my bike as fast as the rest of them, even though I wasn’t sure where we were going or what all the excitement was about.
When I saw those rainbow-colored Popsicles, chocolate fudge bars, and ice cream sandwiches painted on the side of the truck, my eyes grew as big as silver dollars. But then I realized I was going to need a dollar to buy one of the frozen treats my friends were already slurping. I didn’t have a dollar. I watched as each of my friends reached in his pocket for the coins he needed to pay the ice cream man. Suddenly, all eyes were on me. “What are you going to have, Tim?”
I fumbled for an excuse. “I … I’m going to eat soon, so I’m not going to get anything right now.” Everyone believed me-or, come to think of it, I suppose no one really cared why I wasn’t having any-but that day changed my life. Acting casual, I asked a few questions and I learned that my friends all had money in their pockets because of something I had never heard of-an allowance. One of my friends said, ”Yeah, I have to do things around the house every day, but then my parents give me spending money for the week.”
All this time I’d been ignorant, but now I knew that I was on to something that could be a very good deal for me. Since then, I have learned that money is never the problem-the only problem comes when you don’t think there is a way to get it. Believe that you can do it. Use your imagination, focus, and courage, and you will get it. Soon you will know it will come.
There are ways to earn money, ways to save money, and ways to get money. I can’t tell you how many millionaires borrowed money to start the thing that made them rich, famous, or just fulfilled. Money can be a real obstacle, not just an excuse, but it is an obstacle that can always be overcome.
